I ran until I reached the pooling of water, as children, we called the Black Lagoon. We believed monsters lurked below the surface of it’s murky waters. They ate little children who got too close, spitting out only their teeth- and if the teeth were found, the children who had fallen prey, could be identified.

It occured to me, as I stepped closer to the waters edge than I would ever have had courage to do as a child, perhaps that’s how we validated our fears. If someone came up missing, their teeth could be retrieved from it’s muddy floor, and we could prove- they had been eaten by the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Kneeling at the water’s edge, determined to see what evils lurked beneath its surface, I leaned in close to the hazy surface of the water.

But, the only monster I saw staring back, was me..
